Miyake Aoi (三宅葵依?) is a character in the D4DJ franchise, and is the leader of the group RONDO.
Appearance
Aoi is a fairly tall woman with short, dark-grey hair and light, golden eyes. Her appearance is very androgynous, to the point that it is very easy to confuse her with a beautiful feminine boy. Which is only enhanced by her rather boy-ish style of clothing. Thanks to this charm, Aoi is able to charm even those girls who know her well and know about her gender. At one point, Haruna even directly compares her appearance and behavior to the bishonens from the shoujo manga she is reading.
Background
When Aoi was young, she got into a car accident with her parents, who died while protecting her. She was then taken in by her relatives, however she never managed to properly connect with them, and has been living all by herself ever since she was a middle schooler. Her biological father, Miyake Reiji, was also a famous actor who kept his personal life under wraps.[1]
Description
Aoi is a DJ that performs exclusively for a members-only club, "Alter-Ego", which has a long history. Her androgynous looks attract many fans. She became captivated by Tsubaki's vocals and asked her to form a DJ unit.[2]
Personality
Aoi is a calm woman who usually wears a poker face and doesn't show her true emotions, but she opens up her heart to her unit members. She is quite polite, even referring to those younger than her with the "-san" honorific.
Although Aoi may seem like a womanizer and often draws female attention to herself due to her androgynous appearance and princely personality, she does not take advantage of those she meets and often appears oblivious to their affections. At the same time, it is implied that she is already used to people often mistaking her for a handsome guy and appreciates RONDO fans regardless of their perception of her. Although sometimes she gets tired of the excessive passion of her fans.
Etymology
Miyake (三宅) can be split into two parts. Mi (三), meaning three, and Yake (宅) meaning house.
Aoi (葵依) can also be split into two parts. Ao (葵) meaning hollyhock, and I (依) meaning dependence.
Trivia
- Aoi's fear of bugs is so bad that she even hesitates to kill mosquitoes.[3][4]
- When Aoi was in high school, her hair was at waist-length. She mentions that due to her androgynous look, even when she had long hair, people would call her a cross-dressing boy.
- While this may just be a comedic exaggeration, Episode 11 of Petit Mix implies that Aoi's breast size is noticeably larger than other characters'.[5] Ultimately, this is fully confirmed in the "My Prince" event, when Aoi wears a princess dress that shows her cleavage, also confirming that she normally binds her chest.
- Aoi and Muni's laptops have the same colors (both of them are pink).
- Aoi seems to not enjoy cosplay because it's embarrassing.[6] This is in contrast to her voice actor, Tsunko, who began her career as a professional cosplayer and frequently does gravure photoshoots.
- However, she is later show cosplaying in Lightning groove!! -1st Half-. Although it is hinted she doesn't like cosplaying with too revealing costumes.
- Aoi is a fan of the Vanguard series, though she states that she is still an amateur at the game. Her nickname is "Smiling Knight" due the her strategy. However, it is implied she is not the only one, as there are other Cardfighters who are higher level than her.
