Shimizu Esora (清水絵空?) is a character in the D4DJ franchise, and is a member of the group Peaky P-key.
Profile[]
Esora is the backup vocals, dancer and self-proclaimed "lovely" member of Peaky P-key. A natural-born entertainer, she joined the unit to bring entertainment to everyone. She was born to a wealthy family and is willing to spend her own fortune to achieve this goal. She is skilled at getting people to let their guards down and speak their minds.[1]
Appearance[]
Esora has wavy green hair reaching down to her lower back, which she usually ties up in pigtails or in a half-ponytail. Her eyes are a slightly lighter green than her hair.
Background[]
Esora's parents run a consulting firm,[2] so she grew up having a wealthy background and a luxurious upbringing. Though she has a good relationship with her parents, they were often busy with work, resulting in them being unable to spend time with her or even attend her live performances. As a result, Esora struggled to cope with loneliness,[3] which she still does to this day, hating to eat alone or becoming restless when the other Peaky members spend time together without her.[4]
However, Esora never wanted to offend her parents with her loneliness, so she frequently bottled up her feelings around them. This led to a misunderstanding from her parents, who assumed that Esora was simply quiet, thoughtful and never gave them trouble, when deep down, she is truthfully clingy. It isn't until Shinobu calls out her parents on their ignorance that they start making more time to spend with her, and she works on becoming more honest with them.[3]
Aside from that, Esora attended Arisugawa Academy in elementary school with the Lyrical Lily members. There, she started to play the piano because her parents wanted her to,[5] but also because she wanted to be praised and noticed. Through the piano recitals she attended, Esora would meet fellow pianist Rei, and they became close childhood friends.[6]
But it isn't until middle school where Esora decides to transfer to Yoba Academy on her own accord. Although this would mean that she had to part from her old friends, she ultimately wanted to discover diverse talent outside of a prestigious student body and experience more of the world. With that, she would also quit piano, aiming to find something she genuinely enjoyed doing like Rei did with piano. And so Esora would achieve this, meeting the other Peaky P-key members not too long after and starting DJ activities with them.
Personality[]
Esora is a stylish and charming girl, fond of whimsical mischief and teasing. While a clever and calculating strategist who finds creative ways to solve matters, she's also an understanding individual with a lot of depth, who can easily read other people and get them to be honest. Her teasing in particular reveals her ability to grasp the intricacies behind other people's intentions or interactions.
Various in-game scenes imply that this is a result of her rich emotional intelligence and her ability to deeply connect with things personally related to her and around her. For example, she is deeply touched when others or Rei herself comments on how they appreciate their relationships with Esora.
In conjunction to this, Esora is very compassionate, considerate and selfless in her friendships, putting and speaking up for others before herself and is always willing to lend a hand to her peers. For instance, she offered to help Rei out with her piano burnout and balancing her midterms when she learned that she would be participating in a major piano contest, even though Esora had her own tests coming up too.[6]
She is especially caring and affectionate towards the Peaky members and is even willing to use her family assets or spend extravagant amounts of money to create memorable experiences for them and her other friends. The Peaky P-key girls have commended Esora for covering gaps or imperfections in their performances, which she intentionally goes out of her way to do in order to highlight their individual showmanship.[3]
As previously mentioned, Esora gets extremely lonely sometimes, and often puts on a superficial front to hide her vulnerabilities from others. But after various experiences, she starts to face her loneliness and learns to become more comfortable in sharing her vulnerabilities.
Etymology[]
Shimizu (清水) can be split into two parts. Shi (清), which translates to clear, clean or pure, and Mizu (水), which can translate to water.
Esora (絵空) can also be split into two parts. E (絵), which translates to picture, sketch, drawing or painting, and Sora (空), which translates to sky.
Trivia[]
- Esora doesn't have as much stamina as her groupmates, which is why she sounds fatigued during an in-game skill activation dialogue.[7]
- During an in-game dialogue, Esora stated she can do five push-ups despite her low stamina in a nervous tone, as a sign she gets fatigued easily when it comes to exercise.
- Despite this she enjoys and is good at marine sports such as surfing and scuba diving.[8]
- She is the same height as Shika.
- Esora owns a miniature pig called Tiara. She also owns a lizard.[9]
- Some of Esora's favorite homemade dishes include salad, crepes, taiyaki, brown rice, spaghetti, and curry.
- Despite her dislike of eating meals alone, Shinobu and Kyoko mentioned she ate alone in the cafeteria while she and Yuka were still on bad terms during the event Peaky Stormy Story.
- In one of her menu lines, Esora says her house only has one floor while other people think her house has more floors due to how big it is.
- In one of her menu lines, Esora stated that she sometimes wears glasses.
