Togetsu Rei (渡月麗?) is a character in the D4DJ franchise and is a member of the group Happy Around!.
Profile[]
Born into a wealthy family, Rei had lessons in all sorts of activities, showing the most proficiency in piano playing. She felt oppressed by having to live the life her parents had prepared for her, but didn't have the courage to challenge it. When she met Rinku unexpectedly, change began to brew inside her.[1]
Appearance[]
Rei has blueish-black hair and teal-colored eyes. Her hair reaches down to her waist, and part of it is pulled back with a white bow. After the 3.0.0 update in Groovy Mix, she started to have more curlier hairstyles.
Background[]
Rei was raised in a strict household as the planned heiress of the Togetsu family. Her parents, both teachers of traditional Japanese dance and tea ceremony, placed high expectations on her after her older sister defied family tradition by becoming a model. As a result, the responsibility of embodying refinement and discipline for the family fell squarely on Rei.[2]
From a young age, Rei developed a genuine passion for the piano, something that delighted her mother who had been prevented by her own parents from pursuing it. However, Rei's childhood quickly became filled with lessons and practice, leaving her little time to spend with friends.[3] The joy she found in music gradually gave way to pressure, as her mother and teachers pushed her to succeed in competitions, her mother particularly projecting her unfulfilled dreams onto Rei.
This constant pressure led Rei to value results over her own musical expression. The strain came to a breaking point during her middle school graduation ceremony recital, which doubled as her audition for a prestigious music academy. Overcome with tension, Rei froze on stage and delivered a poor performance, costing her a place at the academy.
Rei ultimately enrolled at Yoba Academy. While she did not resent being denied admission to the music school like her mother did, she carried deep regret over her inability to perform when it mattered. She feared that losing her touch with the piano meant losing the very worth she had built her life upon. That perspective began to change after meeting the members of Happy Around!, who accepted her for more than just her musical talent. Through DJ activities, Rei rediscovered her passion for the piano, being able to perform and improvise freely without the weight of others' expectations.[2]
Personality[]
Rei is modest and polite, yet an earnest girl who seeks to experience more in life. Although Rei attends a fairly regular school, her Yamato Nadeshiko skills are so developed that even highly educated and well-mannered girls like Haruna and Esora are impressed by her. For example, when Haruna needed someone as "perfect" as Miyu to gain communication experience and practice giving her a present for White Day, other girls brought Rei to help her out.
Due to her classical upbringing, Rei was often deprived of some of the usual experiences for a girl her age. As a result, she is often flustered or even excited by things that seem completely ordinary to others. For instance, she was thrilled about the idea of having a sleepover with Muni and later Maho, and also perceives playing video games, eating fast food, staying up late while eating sweets, and even building snowmen with everyone in Happy Around! and Lyrical Lily[4] as very exciting events in her life. At some point, Muni even has to warn her that overindulging herself on chips and snacks can be harmful. She is also unfamiliar with various technologies to the point that Muni describes her as being from the "stone age".
Etymology[]
Togetsu (渡月) can be split into two parts. To (渡) means "transit", and Getsu (月) means "month" or "moon".
Rei (麗) means "lovely", "beautiful", or "graceful".
